The Public Library Section met on January 14, 2009 to discuss the KLA/MPLA Conference and breakfast meeting, Fall retreat, and budget.
Attendees: Sharon Moreland, Ruth Rodden, Kim Beets, Rosanne Siemens, Carolyn Little and Ken Werne
The YA group willingly traded time slots with PLS, so our breakfast meeting will be Friday, April 3 in room 204 from 8:00 – 8:50 a.m. The proposed agenda includes promotion of the Fall Retreat, approval of our budget, presentation of our first annual report, a discussion of strategic goals and small group discussions. We will be sending invitations to the public library sections of the MPLA member state associations. Ruth Rodden volunteered to work on a Fall Retreat-related raffle basket.
The 2009 Fall Retreat is scheduled for Thursday, October 1 and Friday, October 2 at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita. The theme chosen is “We Can Do It!” based upon the WWII iconic poster and will focus on making the most of our resources during tough economic times. We will incorporate the ALA’s Advocating in a Tough Economy toolkit in our promotional materials, as suggested by Rosanne. Our goal is to have the main speakers confirmed in time to promote the Retreat with a pushcard included in the KLA/MPLA Conference registration packet and to distribute ‘save this date’ bookmarks at Legislative Day. We are seeking panelists to discuss no-cost and low-cost ways to maintain library services and resources and programs for job-seekers at the library. Speakers will have their registration fee waived. The keynote presentation on Friday will be on human resource issues, such as motivating employees, managing stress and ‘how to give hard messages’ with Toni Boyles.
We are actively recruiting nominees for the position of Secretary.
The next meeting is scheduled for February 27 at the NEKLS office.
